Three by Three: Guest Artists in Focus

QUESTION 2.  Your palette often leans into luminous crimsons, ambers, and golds that feel both energetic and contemplative. How do you approach color when working with a medium where hues shift so quickly and interact so unexpectedly?

  • ANSWER 2.    I am drawn very much to red autumnal tones as these are taken from my own minds eye - it brings passion and light to attract the view of the onlooker and warmth to show compassion. Each cell creates a new hue and this is all part of the journey of the piece - I stop blowing the inks when they tell me to.

MEDIUM:    mainly alcohol inks & pen

BIO: I live in Caterham, Surrey and I turned to art to help me through the passing of my Mum in October 2024. Whilst creating art I find it totally immersive and calming - almost as if time no longer exists, just me with the inks and paper exploring whichever route they send me on. In relation to AI - although there maybe some who find it useful, this takes away the passion and skill required to create. All human input has been removed - so sad to see the art world revolving into a machine.

QUESTION 1.    Yupo paper gives your work a distinctive translucency and movement. What drew you to this surface originally, and how has it shaped the voice you’re developing as an emerging alcohol ink artist?

  • ANSWER 1.     I find the yupo paper lends itself very well to the flow of the inks - it allows freedom to move the inks to where I want them if creating a particular vision or I can allow to let the inks create their own patterns on the yupo surface.

QUESTION 3.  The contrast between your flowing colors and the structured black-and-gold line work creates a striking visual dialogue. What emotional or thematic role do those fine-line details play in shaping the final mood of a piece?

  • ANSWER 3.    The structure is usually the last piece of the puzzle of my work. It helps guide the viewer to appreciate the light and darkness within - I find the more you look the more you see bringing the inner child out to play.
