Three by Three: Guest Artists in Focus

QUESTION 2.    With deep training in transpersonal psychology, hypnosis, and guided imagery, how consciously do altered states of awareness influence your art while you work?

  • ANSWER 2.  In the studio, I intentionally create conditions that support an altered state of awareness—music, aromatherapy, herbal tea, and stillness become part of the ritual. I sit with the canvas and often the initial image simply arrives, unforced and unplanned. Through deep breathing and practiced meditation, I consciously quiet my mind and shift my perception. My studio is a sanctuary, and years of working with meditation and altered states make this transition natural and accessible. When that connection is clear, the painting emerges intuitively. Stepping back from the finished work is often surprising; the final image is revealed, and I’m continually amazed by what comes through onto the canvas.

BIO:  Hi, I’m Dr. Tricia Seymour-Barrier, an abstract texture artist and transpersonal psychotherapist based in Texas, USA. I’ve been creative all my life. I’m blessed to have had parents who encouraged me to explore art, music, dance, theatre, crafting, baking, and more. Although none of these were my chosen profession, as an entrepreneur I was free to be creative in all my endeavors. Now that I’m retired, I have the freedom to focus on my creativity.

I’m a self-taught artist but have taken a variety of art classes both in person and online whenever possible. I love learning new things and challenging myself. My art is all about exploring the mystical side of life—using color, texture, and movement to create pieces that invite you to pause and reflect. Every painting is a conversation with the unseen, blending intuition with technique. I love experimenting with different styles and techniques. Creating art that sparks curiosity, reflection, and spiritual connection is my passion.

QUESTION 3.    Influences like Kandinsky and Frankenthaler emphasized spiritual resonance without literal imagery. What aspects of their philosophies resonate most strongly with how you understand abstraction today?

  • ANSWER 3.     What resonates most strongly for me in both Kandinsky and Frankenthaler is their shared understanding of abstraction as a vehicle for inner and spiritual experience rather than representation. Kandinsky’s belief in painting as a spiritual language, capable of transmitting emotion, vibration, and resonance, deeply aligns with how I approach the canvas. Similarly, Frankenthaler’s emphasis on openness, movement, and allowing the medium to lead reflects my own trust in process and flow. Neither artists sought to impose literal imagery; instead, they listened to what wanted to emerge. That philosophy reinforces my understanding of abstraction today as a receptive practice—one rooted in spiritual intuition and the quiet intelligence of the work revealing itself.

QUESTION 1.    Your abstract works feel less composed than received, as if they emerge through listening rather than directing. What signals tell you that a piece is complete — psychologically or energetically — rather than merely finished?

  • ANSWER 1.    You’re exactly right! My work is more received than composed. I approach each art piece by listening rather than directing, allowing intuition to guide the process. For me, it is important that I move past the fundamentals of the artist process and into a “flow” state where the painting begins to reveal itself. A piece feels complete not when it is intellectually resolved, but when the internal dialogue quiets and the energy settles. When I can stand before my artwork and feel a sense of stillness and gratitude, as if the image has fully arrived through me and onto the canvas, I know it has reached its closure.
