Three by Three: Guest Artists in Focus

QUESTION 2. Where in your work do you leave space for the viewer to find themselves?

• ANSWER 2. A lot of my work has been telling stories about things I've experienced or been through, from being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder to visiting an anabaptist commune in my mid 20's (see painting - the bruderhof), and since the art is always such a part of my story I'm honestly not sure where I leave room for the viewer but I know it's there. I have a painting called "Gadarenes" that features three pigs running off a cliff and physics equations. This piece is actually about my domestic violence experience in 2015-2016, but people who don't know my story about the piece have actually come up to me and told me they find joy in it.

BIO: Vykky Ebner is a mixed media artist from Syracuse, New York, who makes work relating to mental health, religious trauma and domestic violence. Vykky has had work featured on the cover of Stone Canoe Journal and The SFMoMA's instagram. Vykky was also short-listed for Art Basel through a web3 site in 2023.

QUESTION 3. What do you return to when your work feels hollow?

• ANSWER 3. When my work feels hollow I don't return to something I do in my work, I return to galleries and museums and books for inspiration. Going to a gallery or museum or cracking open a good art book always rejuvenates my creative spark.

QUESTION 1. What have you unlearned—creatively or personally—that changed how you make art?

• ANSWER 1. I'm in the process of unlearning a lot of personal constraints, scruples and self stigma that came with being a part of the church as a teenager. This has opened me up to a new world of blasphemy and freedom not just in how I make art but how I live and celebrate life. I've grown a lot as a person by unlearning religious constraints.
