Three by Three: Guest Artists in Focus

QUESTION 2. How does your process change when you’re creating just for yourself versus for an audience or client?

  • ANSWER 2. When I create for myself, I don’t think too much, I simply do what I love. I might choose colors or compositions spontaneously during the process, and the results often surprise me.

When working for clients or an audience, my creative process doesn’t really change much, I still stay true to my way of expression. The difference is that I devote more time and professionalism to the work. Honestly, I feel that I’m still on the journey of rediscovering my artistic emotions and personal style, and it’s wonderful that each day I continue to nurture my love for art by experimenting with different materials and creating new works.

Mai Lam
Painter - Acrylic

BIO: I graduated from the University of Arts in Hue, VietNam with a major in Graphic Design. After many years working across various art-related fields, I began to pursue my own creative journey. From the early development of my style, my works have been characterized by bright colors and strong contrasts between warm and cool tones, creating vivid visual impressions that convey warmth and the joy found in everyday moments.

Currently, my paintings follow a modern still-life approach, featuring meticulously interwoven plaid patterns within natural yet detailed compositions that celebrate simple pleasures: a shared breakfast, the morning light, a familiar daily activity, or the quiet beauty. Altogether, they invite viewers to pause and find happiness in the simplicity of life.

QUESTION 3. What’s one piece of advice you’ve learned in your artistic journey?

  • ANSWER 3. Define and pursue your own style!

I’ve realized that my creative growth depends on exploration, which is why I’ve studied and practiced many different art forms. In painting, I can use acrylic, watercolor, oil, sculpture, each medium offers a fresh sense of connection. However, having access to so many materials sometimes makes it difficult to settle on a single style. Perhaps I’m a bit greedy in that sense , but even now, I remain faithful to the unique style I began developing in my early series, continuing to evolve it through new creations.

QUESTION 1. What emotion or idea do you find yourself returning to, even when you don’t mean to?

  • ANSWER 1. I often enjoy creating works that radiate joy, both in subject matter and color. Even when I begin a new painting intending to keep a muted tone, it almost always ends up filled with bright, vibrant hues. I think that’s a reflection of my emotions, and even my personality, always energetic and eager for new experiences.
