Three by Three: Guest Artists in Focus
QUESTION 2. Light and color appear central to your process. What qualities of light most influence your palette, and how do you use color to evoke emotional states?
ANSWER 2. Light can of course be painted with bright colours like white yellow orange and so on, but to make the light stand out I need to use dark colours to create contrast. Bright and more saturated colours can be used to invoke joy love and hope; more dull and desaturated colours create more moody scenes: calm sad and sobering emotions.
To use differences in one and the same painting, makes it more interesting - like combining lights and darks, maybe have a desaturated moody atmosphere but break that with small shapes of pure colours that sing.

QUESTION 3. You invite viewers on a journey of self-discovery. What responses or interpretations from viewers have surprised you or expanded your understanding of your own work?
ANSWER 3. One of my last paintings with underwater theme, got comments like “spacious”, “otherworldly “or “I wish to rest in that light”. I made a portrait with a half-naked woman with a large red hat, and Facebook contact who had been diagnosed with breast cancer last year loved it, and said it expressed dignity, something I was totally unaware of.
QUESTION 1. You mention bringing hope and beauty into an ever-changing world. How do global or personal shifts shape the emotional tone of your recent work?
ANSWER 1. The chaos in the systems of the world and emotional clearings inside inspires me to focus on the antidote: light hope beauty expansion. I believe artists need to take the lead and envision a new and brighter future and bring that to the canvas. The world is shifting rapidly towards a new golden era, and we are here to build that sowing seeds of the new, while the old is crumbling.
